Supernaturally By: Kiersten White

**** Spoiler Alert*****
This is a review of a second book in a trilogy.  I may give away information regarding the first book.

Evie finally has the normal life she’s always longed for. But she’s shocked to discover that being ordinary can be . . . kind of boring. Just when Evie starts to long for her days at the International Paranormal Containment Agency, she’s given a chance to work for them again. Desperate for a break from all the normalcy, she agrees.
But as one disastrous mission leads to another, Evie starts to wonder if she made the right choice. And when Evie’s faerie ex-boyfriend Reth appears with devastating revelations about her past, she discovers that there’s a battle brewing between the faerie courts that could throw the whole supernatural world into chaos. The prize in question? Evie herself.
So much for normal.

I love Kiersten White!!  She does such a good job creating a great world and characters.  In this book Evie is living in the "real" world, going to school, working a "regular" job at a cafe, she goes on dates with Lend while he is back from school on the weekends.  She now lives with a Vampire and the cafe that she works at is a hot spot for paranormals learning how to live with humans.  Everything is perfect.... should be perfect..... but she is bored out of her mind.  Even having her own locker isn't as cool as she thought it would be.

One day after school Raquel shows up and asks her to come back to work for IPCA on a case by case basis and the best part...?... No working with Fairies.  But that means no using the fairy paths, right?  No, the IPCA has found a human boy that had lived with the fairies and has actually learned how to use fairy paths.

Lend and his father don't want her to go to work for Raquel and the IPCA but Evie feels lost with her life going no where. At first she decides to do small assignments and feels like she is making a difference.  They way she now sees paranormals has changed she finds herself actually helping the good guys while only "bagging and tagging the bad guys.  After a while things start to go wrong.  Little things happen that don't make since and along the way she also runs into a vampire that has more power then any other vampire she has EVER encountered.

I love Evie in this book. In Paranormallcy she had to come to terms with who and what she is. She had some major prejudices to get over.  In Supernaturally it seems as though she needs to start believing in herself.  She also learns to stand up for herself and the things she wants, without needing to make everyone happy.  She meets up with Raquel again and remembers how much she loved her and missed her.  When a chance to work together and see her again Evie decides that it is something that she wants even though Lend and his father don't want her to do it.  She stands up and gains her relationship with Raquel again.

Definitely a great book, especially as book two of this trilogy.  I can't wait to see more from Evie.

Paranormallcy By: Kiersten White

Weird as it is working for the International Paranormal Containment Agency, Evie’s always thought of herself as normal. Sure, her best friend is a mermaid, her ex-boyfriend is a faerie, she's falling for a shape-shifter, and she's the only person who can see through paranormals' glamours, but still. Normal.
Only now paranormals are dying, and Evie's dreams are filled with haunting voices and mysterious prophecies. She soon realizes that there may be a link between her abilities and the sudden rash of deaths. Not only that, but she may very well be at the center of a dark faerie prophecy promising destruction to all paranormal creatures.

I absolutely love this book.  I have now read it twice.  Once when it first came out and again recently for a book group.

I love that the paranormal creatures stayed as close to historically accurate as possible.  Evie had the ability to see past the glamour that most paranormal creatures had to hide themselves.  She could see the rotting corpse underneath the beautiful glamour faces on the Vampires.  She could see the discolored skin of elves/nymphs.  This ability helped her with her job in the IPCA.  She could go into a crowd of people and know faster then anyone who was really human and who was pretending to be.  Once the target was spotted she would "bag/tag" them.  All paranormals went into a large database for tracking and or sterilization.   This had been her life and was all she new but she longed for a "normal" teenage life.  She wanted to go to high school and have a locker and meet guys.

Lend has lived in a paranormal existence his whole life. His father used to work for IPCA but now lived his life trying to help paranormals living around humans.  He was apprehended by Evie at the IPCA headquarters and Evie was the only one that could see him as he really was, he has the ability to shape shift his body to be anyone he wanted.  While he is locked up Evie visits him constantly and they soon develop affection for each other.

Meanwhile there is something out there killing paranormals.  Something is going on with the Fae and especially one fairy's fascination with Evie.  Everything starts going downhill very quickly and it looks like the only one that will  be able to save the world is Evie.

I loved the relationship's Evie has with everyone.  Her best friend Lish is a mermaid that has a computer translator that won't swear and they talk about everything.  Her supervisor Raquel is also her mother figure and communicates with a series of well learned sighs, but she really does love Evie and you can feel it.  Reth, the ex-boyfriend fairy is confusing to me.  I can't decide whether I want him to be a good guy or the bad guy but I love the parts of the story that he makes appearances in.

This is a great/ Clean Young Adult paranormal that is a fun read for adults and most likely I will be re-reading it again in the near future.

In my book group we had the opportunity to speak with Kiersten about this book and I took some notes on what was asked and the answers that she would give us, these are not word for word just my notes on the discussion ....
Note:  If you haven't read this book go and finish it before reading further... there are MAJOR SPOILERS for the ending.

***** SPOILER ALERT******

Q. Why did you kill of Lish? We are so upset...
A. I was really upset with it too. Everytime I was editing the chapter it made me sick. I didn't kill her, Vivian killed her.  I didn't want to kill her, I loved her. From a storytelling point of view it had to happen for Evie to move on. Lish was limited to a tank and wasn't logical toward the end.

Q. In the story Vivian and Evie need to steel soals to fill themselves. But evie hasn't ever stollen any soals.... why not?. Is it lend? Is she finding herlself?
A. I can't tell you... those are some really good thoughts.... you should read the other books. I love your theories and that you are talking about it.

Q. How much do the creatures come from your mind or mythology?
A. Evie and Lend are the only creatures that I created. Everything else was pulled from mythology or regional mythology

Q. I love lend and the idea of the shapshifter... I love to hear about how you molded him
A. He felt like no one ever really saw him or knew him... He can look like anyone but worries that if they knew what he looks like they wouldn't like him. He has a foot in both worlds to be a bridge character to help Evie into the real world.

Q. When you are lookking at the finished book, what are the changes like from the rough draft to final copy? what do they (publisher) ask you to do....
A. I write complete first drafts so not alot actually changes. I go through the dialog to make sure they keep their voice. If the chapter isn't moving anything forward then it shouldn't be there. I send it to my editor and she finds what is good and requests was to make the story stronger.

Q. How long did it take you to write this story?
A. 3 weeks...  personal edit a couple months...

Q. we teach the kids to write what you read... who ispires you?

A. I read a lot of middle grade for younger readers. It is playful... it doesn't take its self too seriously Unfortunate Events, Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place. I like to pull the middle grade to YA. I have a hard time enjoying YA because I have a hard time turning off my internal editor. Likes sort of magic found in real life like in Book Thief, If I Stay, Anna and the French Kiss., and  The Daughter of Smoke and Bone.. phenominal writing. Dream dark- author can write third person with more voice then most people in first person.

Q. with the paranormal being stuck between heaven and hell where to their souls go when released?
A. Their souls aren't supossed to be released... I see them going to the same place that a human's soul will go. There is more information in the third book.

Q. What's the deal with a movie
A. A movie option has been sold. Ray Kay is the director that has been attached music video director. worked with Lady Gaga, Britney Spears and Justin Bieber. This would be his first feature film to direct. The screen writer has been attached and should have a screenplay shortly. When you sell a movie option you have to be ok with someone taking your creation and making it totally different. Should hear in the next few weeks.

Q. Do you outline or just sit down and type?
A. If i know everything that is going to happen in the book I will get bored and stop writing. Part of the fun for me is the discovery... all of my funniest lines and best scenes ALWAYS happen in the first draft.

Q. Was social networking thing something you were doing already or did your editor encourage you to do it?
A. I have always been doing it. I have been blogging to entertain myself. I do it for myself and I think that is why it works. It is great that it has helped me in my career.

Q. How did you deal with the no's before your yes'?
A.I gained ten pounds... not really proud of it. You have to right just for the sake of writing. There are rejections in writing and through all stages of writing. If you do want to be a writer surround yourself with other positive people that like to write... we are crazy and sit home at night listening to imaginary voices and writing down the things they say... and then you fall in love with the imagionary people in your head and when other people don't want to read that they imagionary people have to say we take it hard.
The path to publishing is filled with rejection.
Eat a lot of chocolate.

Q. We liked your made up swear words... Bleep..... your sense of humor comes out in Evie.
A.Humor is an interesting thing.... it was very important for me to write a book that is accesible and I don't swear in real life and I had characters that wanted to swear and I would fight with them... then enter Lish and wanting to swear and it worked and made everyone happy.

Q.What about the 4 book deal with harper?
A. It is 2 books a year publishing schedule in 2013 and 2014
Mindgames Series. It draws from a world I set up in a previously unpublished work. I wrote it in 9 days this June. Mindgames dark thriller paranormal.. mind readers and enpaths and corporations are using these women in espianage against their will. Dual points of view with current events and past events.

Egyption mythology. Modern day daughter of egyption gods. All about family dynamics murder, infidelity of these gods. Daughter has had it and has to deal with where she stand with mythology drama. Every teenager goes through the moment when they realize that their parents aren't perfect... her mother is the godess of motherhood.

2014 book no clue what it is yet.

Q. How is book three comping along?
A. Endlessly (book 3) is in copy edit now.

We had such a good time talking to Kiersten and she has such a great personality.  You can really see why her characters are so endearing to us when you talk to her.  I can't wait to read her upcoming books!!!

Ecstasy Unveiled By: Larissa Ione

A DEMON ENSLAVED Lore is a Seminus half-breed demon who has been forced to act as his dark master's assassin. Now to earn his freedom and save his sister's life, he must complete one last kill. Powerful and ruthless, he'll stop at nothing to carry out this deadly mission.

AN ANGEL TEMPTED Idess is an earthbound angel with a wild side, sworn to protect the human Lore is targeting. She's determined to thwart her wickedly handsome adversary by any means necessary-even if that means risking her vow of eternal chastity. But what begins as a simple seduction soon turns into a passion that leaves both angel and demon craving complete surrender.

Torn between duty and desire, Lore and Idess must join forces as they battle their attraction for each other. Because an enemy from the past is rising again-one hellbent on vengeance and unthinkable destruction.

I love these brothers!  They have all had really hard lives and still just want to do good.  And for a demon that is saying a lot!!  Lore is forced to choose between finishing an assignment from his master and the only woman that has ever made him feel love.  Idess is put between a rock and a hard place when she is trying to keep everyone alive.  I like that Idess was a really strong female character.  She could hold a sword/dagger and fight with the best of them and she didn't stand down from a challenge or opponent.

Usually in romance stories there is a ton of he said she said and both parties usually miss the point, but with this story I didn't really notice it as much.  I don't know if there wasn't as much back and forth as other books or if I just loved the characters enough to not mind.

There is also a lot of story told from the other characters so we still get to see into E's mind and the bad guy and there is a lot more history told about the angels and what they can and can't do.  Plus Reaver makes a couple appearances in this book too.

Warning, this book includes strong language and sexual situations.

After Obsession By Carrie Jones and Steven E. Wedel

Aimee and Alan have secrets. Both teens have unusual pasts and abilities they prefer to keep hidden. But when they meet each other, in a cold Maine town, they can't stop their secrets from spilling out. Strange things have been happening lately, and they both feel that something-or someone- is haunting them. They're wrong. Despite their unusual history and powers, it's neither Aimee nor Alan who is truly haunted. It's Alan's cousin Courtney who, in a desperate plea to find her missing father, has invited a demon into her life-and into her body. Only together can Aimee and Alan exorcise the ghost. And they have to move quickly, before it devours not just Courtney but everything around her.

Wow!!!  I loved this book!  I am a definite fan of Carrie Jones and her Need series and her teaming up with Steven Wedel was a great idea.

I loved Aimee and Alan and even though crazy things were happening they were able to see past the ridiculous and do what was needed.  It was interesting to see the changes that the people in town were going through throughout this story.  It started of small with adjustments in attitudes to full on 180 degree changes.  People that were normally friendly to everyone were suddenly starting fights with strangers.  I liked that we were slowly put into the craziness instead of just thrown into complete chaos.

I really liked the Native American aspects that this book had.  Alan was sure he was Native American but not 100% on which tribe, although he believed he was Navajo.  Because of the uncertainty of the tribe he was able to draw on legends and customs of a lot more tribes and I liked that.

This is definitely going to be a book that I will re-read many times over.  Great Read!!

Blood Rights By: Kristen Painter

The lacy gold mapped her entire body. A finely-wrought filigree of stars, vines, flowers, butterflies, ancient symbols and words ran from her feet, up her legs, over her narrow waist, spanned her chest and finished down her arms to the tips of her fingers.

Born into a life of secrets and service, Chrysabelle’s body bears the telltale marks of a comarré—a special race of humans bred to feed vampire nobility. When her patron is murdered, she becomes the prime suspect, which sends her running into the mortal world…and into the arms of Malkolm, an outcast vampire cursed to kill every being from whom he drinks.

Now Chrysabelle and Malkolm must work together to stop a plot to merge the mortal and supernatural worlds. If they fail, a chaos unlike anything anyone has ever seen will threaten to reign.

Ok, so I basically loved this book.  There is a complete world that Kristen Painter has set up with new species and new myths and histories.  I loved the Comarre, they have beautiful gold tattoo's along their body to make their blood more pure.  They cost a fortune for a vampire to purchase the blood rights and they stay with that vampire until they are freed by the will of their patron or they may request a duel to the death for freedom.

The main characters in this story are very lovable.  You of course have Chrysabelle the strong independent Comarre that fighting for her lift, Mal, the cursed vampire that has to kill everyone he drinks with and then have the voices of those he kills trapped with him forever, Fi a ghost (sometimes corporeal) attached to Mal (the kill that started the curse), Doc, a leopard shifter that can only shift into a house cat.

The villain in this story, Tatiana, is a woman that you really want to bring down.  She uses and abuses everyone near her and her only thoughts are of obtaining dark power.  She will stop at nothing to find Chrysabelle and turn the world upside down.

This is a first book and now I find myself itching to read the rest of the series to see how it ends and what happens with everyone.

Seeking Persephone By: Sarah M. Eden

Persephone is the oldest of her siblings and took over the mother role when her own mother died after the birth of the youngest daughter. Her family wasn't wealthy and soon they wouldn't have anything to help her brothers or dowry for her sisters to entertain marriage prospects. One day an invitation of marriage comes for her from a Duke. This letter simply states that he would like to marry her and to come right before the ceremony.

Persephone marries Adam and goes about her new life in this huge castle all by herself. Adam is known by many to be angry, rude and sometimes violent and she doesn't know how to approach him and start a relationship with him. The only person consistently by his side is a childhood friend, Harry, and even their relationship is difficult with Adam always threatening Harry with death. All Harry ever does is laugh it off and go about his way. Persephone learns from observing Harry and Adam that she must be confident and show now weaknesses and he "might" let her into his life.

Slowly Adam and Persephone start to share a bond as they learn all the ins and outs of each other's personalities.

I love this story... It is sort of a prequel to Courting Miss Lancaster and I love how we get to see Harry and Adam's relationship. They are hilarious together because Harry is always pushing at Adams patience and Adam is constantly threatening him with throwing him out, duellings or death. I loved how Persephone saw past Adams disfigured ear and bad attitude and she saw the man underneath that no one else was willing to see.

I laughed out loud a lot reading this book. Overall this is just a fun, quick, clean read.

Vanish By: Sophie Jordan

Spoiler Alert.... This is a review for a second book in the series.  If you have not read the first book go and read it now!
Jacinda is on her way back to her pride with Cassian, me mother and sister.  Along the way they are stopped by hunters.  Unexpectedly her sister, Tamra, manifests into a dragon.  Not just any dragon, she is a shader.  They have the ability to throw out a mist that confuses humans and keeps them away.  They are also able to remove memories.  Perfect timing on manifesting because that is the distraction that they all needed to get back to their village.

Once at the village Jacinda's problems just start.  She was already in trouble for when she and Az got spotted by hunters in the first book. Instead of taking consequences she left the village without permission and tried to run away with her mother and sister, but she has also done the most forbidden thing a draki can do, she shifted into a dragon in front of humans.  And not just any humans, a bunch of hunters.  She also can't rely on her being the special fire-breather because now her sister is just as rare and special as she is.

The other villagers wont speak to her, including her best friend, she has been demoted to being a fish-gutter for her job and the boy next door keeps hitting on her.  Luckily she has Cassian and Tamra because they are the only ones that will spend time with her. Her mother is also not doing well.  She has been drunk everyday and doesn't eat unless Jacinda forces it on her.

Cassian and Jacinda have a instant physical attraction and she finds out that he actually likes her for being her.... not just because she is the pride's fire-breather.  Will shows up pretending to be a lost hiker and it sends her heart into flutters.  Now she must choose between a life with Will or her perfect life with Cassian. Plus Hunters attack while she is out in the open with Cassian's sister and they get taken!!!

So, I like this book, but again, my favorite partner match for Jacinda is Cassian but I don't know where the author is taking the love story.  I can't wait for the final book to be released next year to get the ending settled.  This story ended on a huge plot cliffhanger and there is a lot the finish up in this next book.
